SCORM vs xAPI: what's the difference?

Compare SCORM and xAPI for eLearning delivery, tracking, LMS requirements, data flexibility and real-world learning experiences.

The short answer

SCORM is usually the simpler choice for packaged eLearning launched and tracked through an LMS. xAPI is designed for recording a wider range of learning experiences using statements sent to a Learning Record Store (LRS).

They solve overlapping but not identical problems, and xAPI is not automatically a better replacement for every SCORM course.

What SCORM is good at

  • Packaging browser-based courses for compatible LMSs
  • Launching learning from an LMS
  • Recording completion, status, score, time and resume information
  • Moving packaged content between compatible systems

For conventional workplace modules, that can be exactly what is needed.

What xAPI changes

xAPI records experiences as structured statements and stores them in an LRS. It can describe learning that does not fit neatly inside a traditional LMS-launched course, including simulations, apps, games, performance activities and other online or offline experiences when the implementation supports them.

Choose based on the reporting question

If the requirement is “Did this learner complete and pass this LMS course?”, SCORM is often sufficient and operationally straightforward.

If the requirement is “What learning and performance experiences happened across multiple systems and contexts?”, xAPI may be more appropriate—but it also requires an LRS, data design, governance and reporting decisions.

You may use both in one ecosystem

Organisations do not need to convert every SCORM course just because they introduce xAPI elsewhere. Existing SCORM content can remain useful while newer experiences use xAPI where richer data is justified.

Five questions before deciding

  1. Must the content run in a specific LMS?
  2. Do you only need completion/pass/score or richer event data?
  3. Do you have an LRS and people who can govern the data?
  4. Will learning happen outside an LMS-launched browser course?
  5. What decisions will the extra data actually improve?
