Retrieval practice means pulling information from memory
Reading content again can create familiarity without strong recall. Retrieval practice asks learners to actively bring knowledge back to mind, which can strengthen future access to that knowledge.
1. Keep most retrieval low stakes
Frequent ungraded checks, short prompts and scenario questions give learners opportunities to remember without turning every attempt into a test. This makes practice safer and more useful.
2. Retrieve after some forgetting has happened
Repeating a question immediately may test short-term memory. Return to important ideas later in the course or in follow-up learning so retrieval requires more effort.

3. Retrieve in the form people will need at work
If the job requires choosing an action, retrieval should include decisions rather than only definitions. Ask learners to recognise signals, choose steps, explain reasoning or solve a realistic problem.
4. Correct errors quickly
Retrieval without useful correction can reinforce uncertainty. Give feedback that clarifies the answer and the principle behind it, especially when the learner has selected a plausible misconception.
5. Make some practice cumulative
Do not abandon earlier topics as soon as a module ends. Mix selected previous content into later practice so learners retrieve across the whole course.
6. Do not confuse retrieval practice with more testing
The goal is learning, not simply generating scores. Use enough retrieval to strengthen memory and decision-making without creating repetitive quiz fatigue.
