Use spaced learning in eLearning by distributing retrieval and practice over time instead of relying on one concentrated learning event.

Spacing means distributing learning over time

A single course can create short-term performance without durable memory. Spacing revisits important knowledge or practice after intervals so learners have to retrieve and rebuild access to it.

1. Space the important things

Do not repeat everything. Prioritise knowledge and decisions that are critical, easy to forget, high-risk or needed repeatedly at work.

2. Combine spacing with retrieval

Simply re-showing the same content is weaker than asking learners to recall, choose or apply it again. Use retrieval practice inside spaced follow-ups.

3. Use realistic intervals

The ideal interval depends on how long the learning needs to be retained and how often it is used. For workplace learning, follow-ups after days or weeks are often more useful than repeating content minutes later.

4. Spacing does not require another full course

Use short scenario questions, manager prompts, practice tasks, microlearning, email nudges or refresher modules. The follow-up should require useful thinking, not merely remind learners that training happened.

5. Connect spaced practice to real work

Ask learners to apply a skill between learning events, then reflect or retrieve what happened. This can strengthen transfer more effectively than keeping all practice inside the course.

6. Avoid repetitive reminder fatigue

Repeated messages without meaningful practice quickly become noise. Vary the context, increase challenge where appropriate and stop when the performance is established or no longer needed.
